Work Experience at Big Games Machine

I rarely get to see my best mate anymore, he's down in London while I've been at uni. So in making plans to visit him, I thought I'd sort out some work experience as well. I'd arranged six days to stay at my mates, so a work experience placement felt more than appropriate.

I'd enjoyed the PR & Comms module of my broadcast journalism degree, but I thought I didn't prove worth in the field with it being my worst module grade on my degree. So to show off my skills, I identified if there were any specialist PR firms for a topic I already carry specialist knowledge for I could get a headstart into applying my PR skills. As a gamer, I Googled videogame PR firms London, emailed the first one and three weeks later I'm interning as a Junior Account Executive for a week.

Big Games Machine is a video game PR firm which provides coverage for independent videogame developers. My duties included compiling press lists in Excel, writing copy and sending pitches with Yet Another Mail Merge.

I also compiled press briefings ahead of Gamescom 2019, which also included adapting my writing for commercial copy for the business-to-business side of the company.

I also compiled coverage reports, which included interpreting data and writing reports for their clients. Using the sites Awario and Coverage Book certainly made this task easier.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to apply both persuasive and journalistic copy I learned from my first class honours degree in a professional capacity.
